Process overview
A carburizing atmosphere must be able to transfer carbon – and also nitrogen in the case of carbonitriding – to the steel surface to provide the required surface hardness. To meet hardness tolerance requirements this transfer must result in closely controlled carbon or nitrogen concentrations in the steel surface.
BOC’s Gas and Equipment Solutions
BOC is a world-leading supplier of specialist gases and mixtures for Carburising and Carbonitriding. We supply nitrogen, nitrogen / hydrogen mixtures and specialist additives based on your requirements.
Carburizing & Carbonitriding - CARBOFLEX®
BOC's CARBOFLEX® atmospheres based on nitrogen and methanol create the right process gas mixtures for carburizing and carbonitriding. For carbonitriding, ammonia is added in addition to the hydrocarbon. We offer complete system solutions including methanol injectors, pump and gas mixing panels.
Benefits with CARBOFLEX®:
Allows you to use just the amount of gas that you need, thus minimising cost
Flexible gas composition gives opportunities to improve quality and increase productivity
Nitrogen used during idling and electric failures gives quick restart of the process
Low costs for supervision and maintenance
Safety is improved as there are no toxic gases outside the furnace
As inert nitrogen is used as the basis gas, the risk of explosions and fires is minimised
